New Campaign To Revoke the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games

On July 13, 2001, the International Olympic Committee voted to legitimize the Chinese government and its practice of human rights violations, with a vote to give the 2008 Olympic Summer Games to Beijing. At the press conference announcing the IOC's decision, the IOC Executive Director, Francios Carrard, announced that the IOC was willing to "bet" on the fact that China's human rights record would improve. It has not.

Free The Fathers launched a new campaign in February, 2003 to persuade the International Olympic Committee to remove the 2008 Summer Games from Beijing. Here's where we are so far:
  • Representative Chris Smith's (R-NJ) office has told us that he will introduce and sponsor a resolution calling for a U.S. boycott of the 2008 Games unless China releases imprisoned Catholic clergy and other prisoners of conscience. We are currently looking for a Senate sponsor for the resolution.

  • Our printer is currently printing postcards for all of our members and their friends to mail. Each member will receive a set of five postcards, with one each going to Mr. Rogge, Chairman of the IOC, President Bush, your two Senators and your Congressman. The postcards to your elected officials will call for a boycott of the 2008 Games.

We have also compiled a list of all the clergy who have been subjected to the imprisonment, humiliation and torture of the Chinese governement since President Carrard's now-infamous gamble. For a list of these brave souls, click here: disappeared clergy

Most of the world's population has simply accepted the "normalization" of China's status in the world without realizing that the "iron fist" of Chinese authoritarianism still exists throughout the nation.

We will make them realize that when they support the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, they are supporting the religious freedom we all take so much for granted.
